Specter of the Past Star Wars The Hand of Thrawn #1 Timothy Zahn Books
This is one of my favorite books of the Star Wars expanded universe. It is written by the forerunner in SW fiction, Timothy Zahn (check out his first Star Wars trilogy, Heir to the Empire). Zahn continues on from the strained relationship between Luke Skywalker and the Emperor's (Former) Hand, Mara Jade. This story is wrought with the fall of the Empire, the rocky state of the New Republic, and the tensions between everyone involved. What I love most about this book is that this is the culmination of the relationship between Luke and Mara. Without giving spoilers away, this is their story. :)Tags : Amazon.com: Specter of the Past (Star Wars: The Hand of Thrawn #1) (8601404580000): Timothy Zahn: Books,Timothy Zahn,Specter of the Past (Star Wars: The Hand of Thrawn #1),Bantam Books,0553298046,Science Fiction - General,Interplanetary voyages,Leia, Princess (Fictitious character),Organa, Leia (Fictitious character),Science fiction,Science fiction.,Skywalker, Luke,Skywalker, Luke (Fictitious character),Space warfare,Star Wars fiction,Children's All Ages - Fiction - Science Fiction,FICTION Action & Adventure,FICTION Science Fiction Action & Adventure,FICTION Science Fiction General,FICTION Science Fiction Space Opera,Fiction,Fiction-Science Fiction,MASS MARKET,Science Fiction - Space Opera,Space opera,Star Wars gifts;star wars;science fiction;fiction;hand of thrawn;fantasy;thrawn;sf;timothy zahn;space opera;new republic era;duology;sff;mara jade;science fiction books;sci fi;sci-fi;sci fi books;science fiction and fantasy;fantasy science fiction;sci-fi fantasy;sf fantasy;science fiction fantasy;fantasy and science fiction;science fiction adventure;sci-fi books;literary science fiction;science fantasy;classic science fiction;fantasy sci-fi;science fiction thriller;science fictionfantasy;space, star wars; science fiction; fiction; hand of thrawn; fantasy; thrawn; sf; timothy zahn; space opera; new republic era; duology; sff; mara jade; science fiction books; sci fi; sci-fi; sci fi books; science fiction and fantasy; fantasy science fiction; sci-fi fantasy; sf fantasy; science fiction fantasy; fantasy and science fiction; science fiction adventure; sci-fi books; literary science fiction; science fantasy; classic science fiction; fantasy sci-fi; science fiction thriller; science fictionfantasy; Star Wars gifts; space,FICTION Action & Adventure,FICTION Science Fiction Action & Adventure,FICTION Science Fiction General,FICTION Science Fiction Space Opera,Science Fiction - Space Opera,Children's All Ages - Fiction - Science Fiction,Fiction,Space opera
Specter of the Past Star Wars The Hand of Thrawn #1 Timothy Zahn Books Reviews
Bit cheesy, but if you like Zahn and Star Wars it's worth your time.
Timothy Zahn did it again. This series is great. I wish it wasn't just a legend now but I don't care, it's that good.
A slow and tedious slog until the last half of the second book, with none of the magic of the original trilogy.
Well, it's part of a duology, so you can kind of expect this book to be incomplete. Like trilogies these days (it seems the art of creating a standalone entry in a trilogy is long dead -- must have died with The Empire Strikes Back), Timothy Zahn clearly wrote one massive book and chopped it in half. It doesn't work.
Zahn continues working through his universe, expanding it and detailing characters even more. The kind-of appearance of Thrawn is one of the few things that makes this book work. It's Zahn, certainly not at his finest, but it is classic Zahn. It's definitely a must-read for Star Wars and Zahn fans, but don't expect anything new here.
Different conflicts between different species inside and outside of the New Republic, which put a strain on the government. Everyone is looking for their fair share. And the New Republic has made mistakes.
...but overall it was pretty meh. There were several 4+star moments, but there were not enough to average out the dull ones. There was minimal character growth on the part of the primaries and the few new roles were sparsely placed, hopefully setup for a larger role in the second book.
That brings me to the end of the book, which apparently is in the next installment. I would have been ticked if I bought this as a new release. I mean it's one thing to wait a week to see what happens on a tv show. It's a completely different deal to wait months and months for the second half of a book to come out. This is yet another case of the almighty dollar being more important than the creation of good quality writing.
Overall, the read is ok, but not what the first Thrawn set was. It does have fewer of Zahn's quirky dialogs like characters using "Point" as the realization and sudden end of verbal debates, the likes of which seriously annoyed me in the first set. The "ending" of this book leads me to believe the next volume will tie up many of the loose ends Zahn and others left dangling in the vastness of space.
Another well written book by Zahn. I enjoy his story development, and the dialog between characters. There is always more depth to his stories than to many in the Star Wars Universe, with a touch of reality added in. I get tired of the magical, unrealistic endings of a few of the authors in Star Wars. All imperials are incompetent or insane tyrants for example, who self destruct through incompetence. Zahn is able to give depth to all sides which I appreciate. With Zahn, he leads you on a path of discovery through his characters, at the same giving his own flair of intrigue and mystery throughout the story.
